Players making their first-ever appearance in the UEFA Champions League will wear special commemorative patches on their shirts during the 2026-27 campaign.
The new initiative is designed to celebrate individual milestones while giving fans and collectors a unique piece of football memorabilia.
The Champions League Group Stageis set to begin next week, with debutants sistinguished from their teammates by tpecial sleeve patches.
Following each player’s first match in the competition, the patch worn during the game will be collected and handed to Topps, the trading-card arm of Fanatics, for use in exclusive signed physical cards.
The initiative follows similar programs that have been introduced in other sports, including the NBA.
Debut patches were also used during the 2026 World Cup in North America, where players including Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke wore the commemorative designs.
The collectibles market could provide significant financial value to the new Champions League initiative.
A rookie debut patch card signed by 2025 NBA first overall pick Cooper Flagg is projected to sell for around $5 million (£3.7 million) at auction, highlighting the potential demand for football versions of the memorabilia.
The introduction of the Champions League patches comes alongside an extension of UEFA’s partnership with Fanatics. Originally agreed in 2022, the relationship has now been extended until at least 2033.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin welcomed the agreement, saying the collaboration would help deliver premium products and memorable experiences for supporters and collectors around the world.
Several high-profile players are expected to receive the special patches this season, including Manchester United duo Bryan Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba.
The initiative will also be extended to women’s football, with debut patches scheduled to be introduced for the Women’s Champions League from the beginning of the 2027-28 season.
The men’s UEFA Champions League 2026/2027 season will kick off on Tuesday, 8th of September, with exciting fixtures including Real Madrid against Inter Milan and Liverpool facing Atletico Madrid amongst many others.
