Chelsea Appoints Enzo Maresca as New Manager on Five-Year Contract

Chelsea Football Club has appointed Enzo Maresca as its new manager on a five-year contract. The announcement, made on Monday, marks a new chapter for the club as they aim to reclaim their position among Europe’s elite teams.

The 44-year-old Italian will officially start his role on July 1, stepping in to replace Mauricio Pochettino, who parted ways with the club last month after just one season. Pochettino’s tenure, albeit brief, saw a notable improvement for the West London side. His impact at Leicester was immediate and profound. Under his leadership, the team surged to an eight-point lead at the top of the Championship by the end of 2023. Despite facing challenges in the second half of the season, including off-field issues, Maresca successfully guided Leicester back to the Premier League, securing automatic promotion and finishing at the top of the standings.

At Leicester, Maresca was known for implementing a possession-based style of play, emphasizing building from the back. This tactical approach resonated well with the squad and was pivotal in their successful campaign. Notably, he used Ricardo Pereira as an inverted full-back, a tactic that Pochettino had also employed at Chelsea, with Marc Cucurella moving into midfield during possession phases.
