Chelsea Complete Signing of Valentin Barco on Seven-Year Contract

Chelsea have strengthened their squad with the signing of midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, with the 21-year-old agreeing to a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Barco becomes Chelsea’s sixth arrival of the summer transfer window, following the signings of Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck, Emmanuel Emegha, Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra. The club did not reveal the transfer fee involved in the deal.

The Argentine midfielder is set to immediately link up with Chelsea’s squad for the remainder of their pre-season tour. The Blues are scheduled to take on Italian side Juventus in Hong Kong on 5 August as preparations continue for the new campaign.

Barco joins Chelsea after a rapid rise through European football. A graduate of Boca Juniors’ academy, he moved to Brighton in 2024 in a deal worth £7.9 million. His stay on the south coast lasted just one year before he secured a move to Strasbourg following what was described as a successful loan spell with the French club.

On the international stage, Barco has already featured for Argentina, making one appearance during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Argentina finished as runners-up to Spain in the tournament. During the competition, Barco was also involved in a notable incident after Argentina’s semi-final victory over England, when he was slapped by Jude Bellingham.

The transfer also continues the close relationship between Chelsea and Strasbourg, with both clubs operating under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Barco is the second player to make the move from Strasbourg to Chelsea during the current transfer window.

His arrival further extends the growing number of transactions between the two clubs. Since the start of last season, Chelsea and Strasbourg have completed 13 deals, highlighting the increasing level of transfer activity between the two sides.

With Barco now officially part of Chelsea’s squad, attention will quickly turn to his integration into the team during pre-season. The midfielder will have an early opportunity to impress as Chelsea continue their preparations, beginning with the upcoming fixture against Juventus in Hong Kong.
