Chelsea open talks for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck in shock transfer

Chelsea have entered discussions with Brighton over a move for 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck. 

The forward is understood to be keen on a switch to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from the Chelsea side that a deal can be completed. 

Welbeck, who has previously played for Manchester United, Arsenal, Sunderland, and Watford, would arrive with more than a decade of Premier League experience.

The pursuit marks a clear change in approach for Chelsea. The Blues also made an attempt for 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka at Sunderland, which was rejected, and have already added 23-year-old Morgan Rogers in a club-record £117m deal. 

They are also closing in on 26-year-old defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a £52m move, both seen as Premier League-ready additions.

Welbeck is coming off his most productive league season. He scored a career-high 13 goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last term, and has 51 goals in 201 games since joining from Watford in 2020. 

He signed a 12-month extension in March that keeps him at Brighton until the end of the 2026-27 season. Brighton declined to comment on the talks.

The potential arrival would add to an already crowded forward line at Chelsea. Joao Pedro is currently regarded as the first-choice striker. 

Nicolas Jackson has returned from a loan at Bayern Munich but is open to leaving with interest from Aston Villa. 

Liam Delap, signed for £30m from Ipswich just a year ago, is increasingly expected to depart despite wanting to work under new manager Xabi Alonso. 

Marc Guiu is available for a permanent deal or loan at about £25m, and there is uncertainty over Emmanuel Emegha despite his recent arrival from Strasbourg.

Alonso is pushing for experience and strong personalities after Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season. 

Welbeck is unlikely to displace Joao Pedro but could provide cover and leadership in a squad without European football this year. 

For Delap and Emegha, who hoped to establish themselves this summer, the move would make first-team opportunities even harder to find.
