Chelsea win in Spain but Real Madrid progress to the semifinals

Chelsea got a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in Spain on Tuesday evening, but it wasn’t enough to see them through to the next round of the UEFA Champions League.

The defending champions faced Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg of their quarter-final fixture. The Blues lost 3-1 at the Stamford Bridge last week, and without the away goals rule, they needed to win by three goals to secure qualification or at least a two-goal margin to force a draw and extra time.

After scoring six against Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend in a 6-0 win, Chelsea were feeling confident about getting a result away from the Bernabeu.

It took just 15 minutes for the goal to start as Mason Mount put Chelsea ahead from a Timo Werner’s assist. Come until the second half when Antonio Rudiger scored in the 51st minute to make it 2-0 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.

It was his second goal for Chelsea in four games and his first UEFA Champions League goal in his career.

Marcos Alonso thought he had given Chelsea the lead on aggregate when he made it 3-0 with a fantastic individual goal that was chopped off by the video assistant referee for handball.

Timo Werner then scored a brilliant individual goal with fifteen minutes left on the clock. Brazilian forward Rodrigo then scored with two minutes left on the clock.

Chelsea should have won it in regular time stoppage time as Mason Mount missed a huge chance missing in the box as the shot went over the bar.

Real Madrid scored in the sixth minute of added time as Karim Benzema headed to score his first goal of the night and fourth of the tie to make it 3-2 on the night and 5-4 on aggregate. The French forward scored a hat-trick in the first leg in Chelsea.

The result now means that Chelsea’s only chance of winning a trophy this season is the English FA Cup, and that will be their next fixture against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semifinal at the weekend.
