Deschamps praises Mbappé’s leadership qualities

Didier Deschamps has described star man Kylian Mbappé as an exceptional leader as they prepare for the tournament’s opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Les Bleus will open their campaign against African giant Senegal, the same opponent that defeated them in the opening match of the 2022 edition.

Mbappé had been criticised by some fans for leaving the France camp to attend to a personal matter before returning, having been granted permission.

Speaking in defense of the skipper in an interview with M6, the French manager said he has taken over from Hugo Lloris very well, adding that he is a real leader.

He further said he is very pleased with what the Real Madrid attacker can offer both on and off the field.

Since the 27-year-old took over from Mbappé Lloris following his retirement from international football, he has come under scrutiny in the past for some of his actions while captain of his nation.

Mbappé didn’t just face scrutiny in his homeland after previously refusing selection in favour of focusing on his club form; this scrutiny has also been reciprocated in Spain, where Real Madrid have failed to win a trophy again.

Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele had previously weighed in on the criticism, stating it has gone too far, saying the former Paris Saint-Germain man remains committed to the cause of the 2022 champions.

In a related development, Mbappé is determined to work on his defensive work in order to help his teammates when it is needed.

Many had criticised the star man for the weakness, and the France captain intends to address it in order to continue improving.

Speaking in an interview during which his own brother, Ethan, who plays for LOSC Lille, asks him about his defensive contribution, Mbappé admitted that he has always been demanding, admitting the need to take it a step further in that regard.

“It’s important for the team, and I have to do it. It all has to start with this World Cup because we want to win it,” he added.
