Borussia Dortmund’s coaching staff praised the team’s resilience and ability to secure vital points after a hard-fought 2-1 Bundesliga victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
Head coach Niko Kovac and sporting director Sebastian Kehl both emphasized the significance of the result, which demonstrated Dortmund’s capacity to compete effectively against top opposition on the road.
Goals from Aaron Anselmino and Karim Adeyemi, both scored via headers, proved decisive as Dortmund leapfrogged their hosts in the Bundesliga standings.
Despite trailing runaway leaders Bayern Munich by nine points following Bayern’s 3-1 win over St. Pauli, Dortmund remain firmly in contention for a top-two finish, sitting just one point behind second-placed RB Leipzig.
Leverkusen, Hoffenheim, and Stuttgart are all within three points of Dortmund, making consistency essential in a tightly packed race for Champions League qualification.
Statistically, Dortmund’s performance underscored their efficiency. Despite registering only seven shots compared to Leverkusen’s 14, they held a slight edge in expected goals (xG), producing 0.99 to their opponents’ 0.82. Notably,
Dortmund generated 0.86 xG in the second half alone, reflecting a marked improvement after a challenging opening period. Kovac highlighted this second-half dominance as evidence of the team’s ability to elevate their performance when it mattered most.
For Kehl, the victory carried added importance following two consecutive draws in which Dortmund relinquished leads against Hamburg and Stuttgart.
The win against Leverkusen demonstrated a renewed capacity to see out tight contests and secure three points from winning positions.
The result sets the stage for an immediate rematch, as Dortmund will host Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal round of 16 on Tuesday, followed by a Bundesliga home fixture against Hoffenheim the subsequent weekend.
Both Kovac and Kehl expressed confidence that the performance against Leverkusen reflects the team’s potential to sustain a title challenge, provided they maintain the determination and clinical finishing displayed in the narrow but significant victory.
