England to hire manager on interim basis

With the UEFA Nations League fixtures against Republic of Ireland and Finland fast approaching next month, England are set to appoint Lee Carsley on an interim basis.

Carsley is set to replace Gareth Southgate, who resigned as England boss barely forty-eight hours after losing to Spain in the 2024 Euros final last month. Carsley, on the other hand, led the England Under-21s to the European Championship for the first time in 39 years in 2023.

Fifty-year-old Carsley is a former Premier League midfielder who played for 17 years and played for several club sides, including Derby and Everton. His managerial career saw him take charge of Coventry, Brentford, and Birmingham before joining the England set-up in 2020.

Carsley let the English under-21 team, which consisted of players like Liverpool duo Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, Bournemouth’s Max Aarons, Everton’s James Garner, James Trafford, and Angel Gomes, win the trophy in 2023 by defeating the Spanish under-21 side at the under-21 Euros championship.

While the English FA have published an advert for the vacant managerial role, Carsley is taking a path that some previous managers have taken from the under-21s manager to caretaker boss of the senior team.

Howard Wilkinson, Stuart Pearce and Southgate are managers who went to manage the Three Lions after taking charge of the Young Lions. Southgate was in charge for eight years, leading England to a World Cup semi-final in 2018, a quarter-final in 2022 and Euros finals in 2021 and 2024.

The English FA has refused to give further information about the selection process for the vacant managerial job other than posting the vacancy and stating their intent to make do with an interim manager for the September international break.

The games against Republic of Ireland and Finland will be England’s first since losing the Euros final.
