English FA confirm officials for Arsenal v Manchester City Community Shield fixture

The Football Association has confirmed the match officials for the 2026 FA Community Shield, with Sam Barrott appointed as the referee for the season-opening clash between Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City.

The encounter is scheduled to take place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, August 16, with kick-off set for 3:00 p.m. BST.

According to the FA, Barrott, who recently officiated at the UEFA Under-19 European Championship, will oversee the traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season.

He will be assisted by Craig Taylor and Blake Antrobus, while Farai Hallam has been named as the fourth official and Alistair Nelson will serve as the reserve assistant referee.

The Video Assistant Referee team will consist of James Bell as VAR and Tim Wood as the Assistant Video Assistant Referee (AVAR).

The appointments were confirmed in an official statement released by the Football Association ahead of the highly anticipated fixture.

Manchester City will be making their first Community Shield appearance since 2024 as they seek to reclaim the trophy.

The match will also mark the beginning of a new chapter for the club under head coach Enzo Maresca, following the departure of long-serving manager Pep Guardiola at the end of last season.

Arsenal, meanwhile, return to the Community Shield for the first time since 2023 when they defeated Manchester City on penalties after a goalless draw at Wembley Stadium.

The Gunners qualified for this year’s edition after winning the 2025-26 Premier League title, while City earned their place by lifting the FA Cup.

The 2026 Community Shield will officially usher in the new English football season, continuing the tradition of pitting the Premier League champions against the FA Cup holders.

Crystal Palace are the defending Community Shield champions after defeating Liverpool on penalties in the 2025 edition following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
