Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee has reacted to his late call-up to the Netherlands squad for the European Championship slated for Germany.
The Bologna striker was forced to abandon a trip to Disney World after getting a last-minute call-up to the national team for Euro 2024.
The Dutch manager Ronald Koeman initially left the 23-year-old out of the 26-man-squad for the tournament but had to add him after Dutch midfield pairing Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners were ruled out of the competition due to an ankle problem and a groin injury.
He Is now in line for his first cap for the Netherlands at senior level
Koeman has decided to bring in the striker who had himself thought he would be free for the next few weeks and had opted to spend what he thought would be a summer holiday at Disney World in Florida.
Zirkzee, enjoying his trip when he got the news, shared his selfie on social media, showing himself with a massive grin and captioning the picture: ‘When you get the call to leave Disney for the Euros.’
Also getting a late call-up is Ian Maatsen, who was on a half-a-billion-pound yacht in Greece.
He complimented the post with a video showing himself heading away from Disneyland and towards Euro 2024, adding the words: ‘Happy me pt 2’.
Reacting via their social media, Disneyland wrote: “Joshua, good luck at @euro2024, and we invite you to complete your Disney trip after the storm at Disneyland Paris!”
He is going into the Euros fresh off the back of an excellent season with Bologna in Serie A, scoring 12 goals across his 37 appearances in all competitions.
His contributions have made him one of the transfer targets from a top club, having helped Bologna to a fifth-place finish in the league. If he stays in Bologna beyond this summer, he will compete with them in the Champions League next season.
