Euro 2020: Germany injury concerns ahead of final group game

Germany were highly impressive in their 4-2 win over Portugal on Saturday. Germany were considered underdogs in the group due to the recent success of both France and Portugal but Germany have been the best side in the group so far.

Despite losing their tournament opener 1-0 to France, they looked quite good in the match and had a few chances to draw level. Portugal came into the match against Germany on the back of winning 3-0 against Hungary but the Cristiano Ronaldo-led side were stunned as Germany kept launching one attack after another.

With their final group game against a resilient Hungary side, Germany are in a great place to qualify for the round of 16. France are currently at the top of the group with 4 points. Both Germany and Portugal are on 3 points but Germany have an advantage as they have an easier fixture to contend with.

However, everything isn’t hunky dory for Die Mannschaft as a few of their players got injured and missed training following their win against Portugal.

Veterans Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller were both missing from training, which is a cause for concern as the duo started in both their games so far. Left back Marcel Halstenberg was another player missing, but his absence won’t change their plans a lot.

“With Mueller it is a decision that will be taken day by day. I cannot answer that today,” team spokesman Jens Grittner told a news conference. Prospects for the other three to be fit for Wednesday’s final group game against Hungary were also unclear.

The fourth player who missed training was Ilkay Gundogan. Gundogan’s absence could be softened by the fact that Leon Goretzka should be fit and ready to take part in their next match which may see Gundogan being rested. Hummels was nursing a knee inflammation while Gundogan and Halstenberg had muscle injuries.

Germany will face Hungary at Munich in their final group game on Wednesday while France will lock horns with Portugal at the Puskas arena in Hungary.
