Thomas Muller displayed his frustration over his performance from 2 nights ago when he took to social media to issue apology to German fans. Germany lost 2-0 against England in the round of 16 clash at Wembley.
The game was at a stalemate until Raheem Sterling’s opening goal in the 75th minute. The Wembley crowd went into a frenzy as England took the lead but their joy could have turned into sorrow just half a dozen minutes later when Sterling’s back pass put Thomas Muller through on goal.
The Bayern Munich vice-captain would have scored the goal 9 out of 10 times, but on that instance, he missed the target. The English fans and players, especially Raheem Sterling breathed a sigh of relief. In the 86th minute, Harry Kane scored the second goal and the result was all but certain at that point of time.
Thomas Muller had the best chance of the entire game, including both the goals and some other chances which fell to the likes of Timo Werner and Raheem Sterling. Muller expressed his regret over the failure to qualify to the quarter finals and stressed on his miss during the 81st minute in a statement via Bayern Munich’s Instagram account.
“That was it, that one moment that sticks in your mind and keeps you awake at night. The kind of moment you work for, train for, live for. The moment where it falls on you to get your team back on level terms in a tight knockout game and send an entire football nation into ecstasy. To have this opportunity and then waste it hurts like hell. It hurts to think about the whole team, my teammates and our coach, who all put their trust in me to be there and deliver at exactly that moment. But most of all, it hurts because of all the Germany fans out there who stood by us and supported us throughout this tournament, despite the difficult circumstances. Thanks for your support”
Knowing Thomas Muller, he will not back down from this bad moment and will comeback even stronger in the future.
