England manager Gareth Southgate has stated that he is undecided about his future as the head coach of the Three Lions after their ouster from the FIFA World Cup in the quarterfinal in Qatar.
England was eliminated by France 2-1 in the regular 90 minutes after Harry Kane scored a penalty and missed another minute before the end of the game to destroy their chance of reaching the semifinals for the second consecutive FIFA World Cup.
However, since the elimination, there have been talks about the future of England manager Gareth Southgate who has now spent six years at the helm of affairs.
He led England to fourth place in 2018, and the final of Euro 2020 made him be one of England’s most successful managers with the highest win rate at competitions.
The manager has a contract with the FA till 2024, but he stated that he is still unsure if it’s the right thing to stay as he continues to debate his next move.
“I don’t want to be four, five months down the line thinking I’ve made the wrong call. It’s too important for everybody to get that wrong. I’ve found large parts of the last 18 months difficult. There are lots of things in my head that are really conflicted at the moment, so what I want to make sure, if it’s the right thing to stay, is that I’ve definitely got the energy to do that.” Southgate said.
Southgate has taken charge of 81 England games, winning 49 with just 14 losses. He’s fourth on the list of England managers with the highest win percentage at 60.49%.
Should he decide to stay, Southgate’s next target will be to qualify England for Euro 2024, set to be hosted by Germany.
