Gyökeres pushes Sweden past Poland to the World Cup

Viktor Gyökeres struck a dramatic late winner as Sweden defeated Poland 3-2 to secure their place at the FIFA World Cup, sealing victory in a thrilling European qualifying play-off final on Tuesday night in Stockholm.

Managed by Graham Potter, Sweden took an early lead through Anthony Elanga in the 19th minute.

The Newcastle winger produced a superb finish that clipped the crossbar on its way in after a clever assist from Yasin Ayari, giving the hosts a strong start in front of their home crowd.

Poland responded just 13 minutes later, with Nicola Zalewski curling a fine effort from the edge of the box to level the score.

Despite the setback, Sweden regained the advantage just before half-time when defender Gustaf Lagerbielke powered in a header from a free-kick delivered by Benjamin Nygren.

The visitors refused to back down and equalised again in the 55th minute. Zalewski turned provider this time, breaking down the flank before setting up Karol Świderski for a simple close-range finish, bringing Poland back into the contest and shifting momentum in their favour.

Poland looked the more likely side to snatch a winner during a tense second half, but Sweden held firm, with goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt making several key saves to keep the hosts in the game.

As the match edged towards extra time, Sweden mounted a late push in search of a decisive goal.

That moment arrived in the 88th minute when Gyökeres reacted quickest after a shot from Besfort Zeneli struck the post, calmly finishing into an empty net to spark wild celebrations.

The victory not only secured Sweden’s place at the World Cup but also delivered revenge for their defeat to Poland in the play-off final four years earlier.

Elsewhere, Italy missed on a third consecutive FIFA World Cup after losing on penalties to Bosnia.
