Inspired Portugal stun Germany to secure spot in Nations League finals

In a thrilling UEFA Nations League semifinal, Portugal staged a second-half comeback, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, to defeat Germany and secure a spot in the final.

The match, briefly delayed by weather, saw Portugal start aggressively, testing Germany’s goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who made his first appearance since September 2024, with several promising shots.

Germany weathered Portugal’s early pressure and gradually found their rhythm. Despite missing their injured star Kai Havertz, the hosts created the half’s best opportunities, with goalkeeper Diogo Costa making two crucial saves in quick succession.

Standout performances from Aleksandar Pavlović and Leon Goretzka provided highlights in a first half that otherwise lacked consistent flair from both teams.

The second half began with Germany seizing control. Just three minutes in, they capitalized on a mistake by Portugal’s Francisco Trincão, whose giveaway in his own half led to a precise assist from Joshua Kimmich. Florian Wirtz headed the ball past Costa, giving Germany a 1–0 lead and energizing the home crowd.

Portugal responded swiftly after falling behind. Manager Roberto Martínez introduced three substitutes in the 58th minute, including Francisco Conceição, who made an immediate impact. The 22-year-old equalized five minutes later with a stunning long-range strike, reigniting Portugal’s hopes and shifting the momentum in their favor.

The comeback was completed in the 68th minute when Nuno Mendes delivered a pinpoint pass to Cristiano Ronaldo, who finished clinically to put Portugal ahead 2–1. The goal showcased Ronaldo’s enduring brilliance and silenced the German crowd, as Portugal took control of the match.

Portugal held firm to their lead until the final whistle, ending Germany’s eight-match unbeaten streak. With this victory, A Seleção advanced to the UEFA Nations League final, set for Sunday, June 8, where they will face either Spain or France in a bid for the title.
