In the final matchday of the Champions League league phase, Borussia Dortmund hosted Inter Milan at the iconic Westfalenstadion.
With crucial knockout spots at stake, the hosts suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss, relegating them to the play-offs as an unseeded team, facing an away second leg in the draw.
Inter Milan dominated possession from the outset, but Dortmund created the first notable opportunity.
A corner led to Julian Ryerson’s mishit shot, setting up Serhou Guirassy for a one-on-one. However, the striker failed to connect cleanly, allowing Yann Sommer to smother the effort.
The visitors responded with half-chances, as Federico Dimarco and Yann Bisseck tested Gregor Kobel with stinging shots.
The game’s frantic pace slowed after the half-hour mark, with clear openings becoming scarce.
The first half carried the intensity of a cup final, given the high stakes in the standings. Before the interval, Fábio Silva headed wide from a Ryerson delivery, while Luis Henrique found Ange-Yoan Bonny, who miscued his header.
Dortmund returned from the break with renewed energy. Ramy Bensebaini’s free-kick found Maxi Beier, but he couldn’t convert. Inter made a change around the 55th minute, substituting Edu Esposito for the ineffective Bonny.
Under Niko Kovač, Dortmund appeared more threatening, though without genuine clear-cut chances. Esposito nearly capitalized on a defensive lapse, only for Bensebaini’s brilliant sliding block to deny him.
With about 20 minutes left, Karim Adeyemi came on for Guirassy and almost made an immediate impact, but Sommer reacted swiftly to secure the ball. At the opposite end, former Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram headed straight at Kobel.
The breakthrough arrived in the 81st minute when Felix Nmecha fouled Henrikh Mkhitaryan just outside the box.
Dimarco stepped up and curled a sublime free-kick over the wall into the corner, breaking the deadlock.
Dortmund struggled to mount a comeback, including a tepid penalty shout that went nowhere. In stoppage time, Inter sealed the result as substitute Andy Diouf capitalized on Adeyemi’s sloppy possession, weaving into the box and scoring via a deflection.
This defeat leaves Dortmund vulnerable in the play-offs, while Inter Milan strengthens their position as Serie A leaders, advancing confidently in Europe.
