Gvardiol backs Maresca to lead Manchester City Into new era

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has expressed confidence in new manager Enzo Maresca, describing the Italian as the “perfect one” to lead the club following the departure of long-serving boss Pep Guardiola. 

Maresca officially began his reign during City’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong, where the Premier League champions suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Inter Milan in a friendly.

Maresca faces the daunting challenge of succeeding Guardiola, who stepped down at the end of last season after a decade of unprecedented success at the Etihad Stadium. 

The 46-year-old signed a three-year contract after previously guiding Leicester City to the Championship title and Chelsea to FIFA Club World Cup success.

Speaking after meeting the new manager, Gvardiol praised Maresca’s qualities and fresh ideas while acknowledging that adapting to a new coaching philosophy would take time. 

The Croatian defender said the players are committed to supporting the Italian and adjusting as quickly as possible to his tactical approach.

Gvardiol also reflected on Guardiola’s departure, admitting that many within the squad sensed the Spaniard’s time at the club was drawing to a close. 

He believes the timing of Guardiola’s announcement was appropriate, saying an earlier decision could have affected the team’s mentality during the season. 

Guardiola left the club after 10 years, bringing an end to one of the most successful managerial spells in football history.

The 24-year-old recently returned from injury after missing five months last season with a broken bone in his right leg. 

He also represented Croatia at the FIFA World Cup, where Portugal eliminated his side in the Round of 32 after a late equaliser was ruled out following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.

Attention has also turned to Manchester City’s leadership group following the departures of Bernardo Silva and John Stones. 

Gvardiol believes Portuguese defender Ruben Dias is the leading candidate to become the club’s next captain, while adding that he is ready to take on greater responsibility himself after signing a new five-year contract with the Premier League champions.
