Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has spoken in support of Germany forward Timo Werner who has had a hot and cold season with Chelsea. Boateng believes that the Chelsea striker will show his true colours at the upcoming Euros for Die Mannschaft.
Werner joined Chelsea with a lot of expectations £47.5million move to Chelsea from RB Leipzig, where he was the record goalscorer in their short club history. Werner failed to replicate his prolific form in England and hence the Chelsea fans were disappointed at the start.
While he squandered chances in front of goal, he also played a pivotal role in attack helping Thomas Tuchel’s men to clinch the Champions League trophy. His exceptional runs mainly during counter attacks creates space for other attackers. His ability to create space and find teammates in tight areas make him a huge threat near the final third.
Boateng feels that Werner will come to his best form during the European Championships helping Germany dive deep into the tournament. The centre-back who was not recalled by Joachim Low for the Euros feels that Werner has the hunger to prove his doubters wrong.
“Timo has changed country, club, playing in a new league,” Boateng told BILD. “It is not so easy. Nonetheless, he scored his goals, provided assists, was present, went through a hollow and came out and now he’s the Champions League winner.
“For me, it has been a positive season with the usual ups and downs. It makes him bigger and stronger and he learns from it.
“At the Euros, we will see another Timo Werner, a hungry Timo. A Timo with more arrogance, because he has just won the Champions League. It carries you. He will show who he really is.”
The 25-year-old featured in 52 matches for Chelsea this season in all competitions scoring only 12 goals out of which six goals came in the Premier League. He also had a 14-game dry spell where he went without scoring. However he came up with 15 assists showing glimpses of his brilliance as a forward.
Werner will hope that he can change his fortunes for Germany at the Euros and help the team with some crucial goals.
