Spain and Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a glittering 19-year career that saw him win 25 major trophies and establish himself as one of the best left-backs of his generation.
Alba, 36, confirmed that he will hang up his boots at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season, closing a chapter that has spanned elite competition in Europe and North America. The Spaniard said it was “time to open a new chapter” after nearly two decades at the top level of the sport.
The veteran fullback began his professional journey at Valencia before securing a move to Barcelona in 2012, where he formed part of one of the most dominant teams in modern football history.
Playing alongside Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Andrés Iniesta, Alba won multiple La Liga titles, Champions Leagues, and domestic cups during his 11-year stay at Camp Nou.
Internationally, Alba made over 90 appearances for Spain, playing a key role in their Euro 2012 triumph and representing his country at several World Cups and European Championships.
Known for his blistering pace, overlapping runs, and telepathic link-up play with Messi, he became synonymous with Barcelona’s attacking style.
After leaving Barcelona in 2023, Alba joined Inter Miami CF, reuniting with Messi and Busquets in Major League Soccer. He helped the Florida-based club achieve its first major silverware and contributed both leadership and experience in the latter stages of his career.
As he prepares to retire, tributes have poured in from teammates, coaches, and fans across the world, celebrating Alba’s consistency, professionalism, and longevity. His departure marks the end of an era for both Spanish football and the golden generation that redefined the modern game.
Alba’s biggest trophies collection came during his time in La Liga with FC Barcelona and it is left to be seen if he will return to the club in a different capacity in the future.
