Striker Joshua Zirkzee has been added to the Netherlands squad for the upcoming European Championship, only hours after head coach Ronald Koeman stated he did not feel the need to fill his quota of 26 players for the tournament in Germany.
Zirkzee, 23, who had been part of the Dutch pre-selection, found himself out of contention due to an injury. However, with his recent recovery, he received a last-minute call-up following an injury scare at a training session on Wednesday.
Brian Brobbey, another forward, had to receive treatment for his hamstring after a collision with defender Matthijs de Ligt, prompting Koeman to reconsider his earlier decision.
Earlier in the day, Koeman had addressed the media, announcing he would not be replacing both Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners, who were ruled out on Monday due to injuries. Instead, he opted to bring in only Ian Maatsen, leaving the Dutch squad one player short of the maximum 26 permitted for the tournament.
The inclusion of Zirkzee, who has yet to earn a senior cap, is seen as a strategic move. The Dutch football association confirmed that the young striker is expected to join the squad on Thursday. His recent performances in Serie A with Bologna have garnered attention, linking him with potential transfers to some of Europe’s top clubs.
Despite the setback of his initial injury, his recovery and subsequent performances have proven his capability and readiness to compete at the highest level. His addition brings a fresh dynamic to the Dutch squad, potentially bolstering their attacking options as they prepare for the rigorous competition ahead.
The Netherlands will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland in Hamburg on Sunday. With Zirkzee now in the mix, fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how the young striker integrates into Koeman’s tactical setup and contributes to the team’s efforts on the European stage.
