Konate Nears New Liverpool Deal as Defender Signals Commitment to Anfield Future

Ibrahima Konaté has revealed he is on the verge of agreeing a new contract with Liverpool FC, strongly suggesting he will remain at Anfield beyond the summer despite months of speculation over his future.

The 26-year-old centre-back, whose current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, spoke candidly following Liverpool’s victory in the Merseyside derby. Konaté made it clear that talks with the club have been ongoing for some time and are now nearing a positive conclusion.

“There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement,” he said. “I think everyone wished for that for as soon as possible but we are in a good way.”

Konaté also emphasized that his desire to stay has never wavered, hinting that discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes had been clear from the beginning. “For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted,” he added.

The French international, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in a £35 million move five years ago, has become a key figure in the squad, making 113 Premier League appearances and contributing to multiple domestic successes, including a league title and cup triumphs.

Addressing the delay in finalizing his contract, Konaté pointed to similar situations involving teammates such as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, suggesting the timeline may reflect the club’s negotiation approach. “It was exactly the same… this is maybe how the club want it,” he explained.

Despite his optimism about his future, Konaté did not shy away from criticizing Liverpool’s current campaign. “It’s been a bad season for the standards of Liverpool. If we finish in the top four, we won’t be happy, for sure,” he admitted, while stressing the importance of securing Champions League qualification.

Off the pitch, the defender has endured a difficult year, including the loss of his father in January. Reflecting on personal challenges, he said, “It was a tough year because many things happened… people could understand many things, which kind of sacrifices I’ve done for this club.”

Konaté remains focused on finishing the season strongly, but hinted that this period will hold lasting significance. “It’s going to be a big part of my story… it’s sad in one part, but it’s very nice for my story when I explain that to my future kids.”
