Matt Fitzpatrick came through a tight finish to win the RBC Heritage, edging Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at Harbour Town Golf Links.
The two players ended regulation tied at 18-under, with Fitzpatrick securing the title on the first extra hole.
He went into Sunday with control of the event, holding a three-shot lead and extending it early with birdies on two of his opening three holes. For much of the round, that cushion allowed him to manage the course rather than chase it.
Scheffler, though, kept within range and made his move late, picking up shots on 15 and 16 to narrow the gap to one heading to the final hole.
The 18th was when things took a turn. Both players missed the green to the right, leaving short-game work to decide the outcome. Scheffler executed cleanly, chipping close and converting for par to post a 67.
Fitzpatrick’s approach to the green left a longer recovery, and his chip came up short. When the par putt missed, the door opened, and a closing bogey forced a playoff after a round of 70.
Returning to the same hole, the pressure could be felt around the course. Scheffler again found distance off the tee but left his approach short of the target, needing to rely on his short game for a save. Fitzpatrick took a more direct route.
From over 200 yards, he cleared the bunker and held the green, leaving a makeable birdie chance.
That shot set up the finish. Fitzpatrick converted the putt, while Scheffler could only manage par, settling the contest without extending beyond the first playoff hole.
The result gives Fitzpatrick another win at Harbour Town and continues a strong stretch of form that has built over recent starts. It also reinforces his ability to close in tight situations, even after letting a lead slip late in regulation.
Scheffler, finishing runner-up for a second straight week, again taking lessons home with him to turn his next outing into a success. Si Woo Kim finished third at 16-under, just outside the playoff.
