Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal has addressed the growing comparisons between himself and football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that his ambition is not to surpass either legend but to earn a place alongside them in football history.
The 17-year-old winger has emerged as one of the sport’s brightest young talents after a remarkable rise with FC Barcelona and his influential role in Spain’s triumph at UEFA Euro 2024.
His performances have prompted frequent comparisons with Messi and Ronaldo, who dominated world football for nearly two decades, but Yamal says he remains focused on forging his own path.
Speaking about the comparisons, Yamal explained that he hopes his name will eventually be mentioned in the same conversations as the two all-time greats.
Rather than measuring himself directly against them, he wants to build a career that earns similar recognition through his own achievements and style of play.
The Spanish international also stressed the importance of concentrating on personal development instead of becoming consumed by expectations.
He believes constantly comparing himself to other players could hinder his progress and says his priority is to continue improving, enjoying football, and entertaining supporters.
After a standout season in Catalonia, he has already established himself as a key figure in Barcelona’s future plans.
Yamal also turned his attention to Spain’s ambitions at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite Spain entering the tournament among the favourites following their European Championship success, he warned against complacency, noting that strong contenders such as Argentina, France, Portugal, and England will all pose major challenges.
He emphasized that Spain must take each match individually while remaining faithful to their attacking style of play.
However, there remains uncertainty over Yamal’s fitness ahead of the World Cup. The teenager is currently recovering from a muscle injury suffered during the closing weeks of the La Liga season, raising doubts about his availability for Spain’s opening group-stage fixtures.
Medical staff are reportedly taking a cautious approach, with hopes that he could return in time for a potential clash against Uruguay as Spain begins its quest for global glory.
