Late Cunha Strike Rescues Manchester United in Fulham Draw

Matheus Cunha struck in the final minute of normal time as Manchester United rescued a point in a dramatic Premier League draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

United appeared to be heading for a third successive defeat after Lisandro Martinez’s own goal put Fulham ahead in the second half. But Cunha denied the hosts their first league victory of the season when his 20-yard effort took a heavy deflection off David Affengruber and flew beyond Bernd Leno.

The late equaliser was tough on the Fulham goalkeeper, who had produced several important saves as United increased the pressure in search of a way back into the contest.

Michael Carrick’s side ended a difficult week by avoiding another defeat, although their early-season struggles continue. United go into the international break 12th in the table with five points from five matches. Fulham remain 19th with two points.

There was little to separate the teams early on before United began to find their rhythm. Bruno Fernandes went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock after Cunha picked him out, but his effort struck the post.

Fulham responded strongly to that warning. Josh King and Oscar Bobb both threatened for the home side during a lively spell in which chances arrived at both ends.

Cunha was also unfortunate not to score before the break. His long-range attempt took a deflection, looped over Leno and struck the post. Marcus Rashford later had another excellent opportunity for United but sent his volley over the bar.

The match slowed considerably after half-time before a chaotic moment handed Fulham the advantage. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens struggled with Calvin Bassey’s low effort and, as he attempted to recover, Martinez’s poor touch sent the ball into his own net.

United responded by taking control and forcing Fulham deeper. Leno produced excellent saves to keep out Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha as Alvaro Arbeloa’s team tried to protect their narrow advantage.

Their resistance finally ended with one minute of the 90 remaining.

Cunha tried his luck from outside the penalty area, with the ball striking Affengruber and changing direction dramatically. Leno was left wrongfooted as the shot found the corner.

The equaliser ensured United avoided a third defeat in a week, while Fulham were left frustrated after coming within minutes of securing their first Premier League victory of the campaign.
