Genesio: There isn’t any idea of resigning as Marseille manager

Olympique Marseille manager Bruno Genesio has denied that he will resign after a bad start to the season.

Marseille are already in the history books for the wrong reason, as the club has already lost five of their first six Ligue 1 games. 

They had to sell assets to balance the books and keep promises made to UEFA and the DNCG at the start of the summer – a situation that leaves OM’s squad considerably weakened in both quality and quantity.

Their latest defeat came against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, as Luis Enrique’s men left with maximum points in Sunday night’s Le Classique.

This waswas Marseille’s fifth defeat in their opening six matches of the season, putting Genesio under huge pressure after they lost their first four Ligue 1 games in their first five.

They now head into the international break in the relegation zone, making it their worst start in the club’s history.

This concludes a turbulent week, during which CEO Stéphane Richard evoked an existential threat to the club’s resistance, amid their financial struggles.

When asked after the Sunday clash about his future at the club, Genesio denied it, saying he had no idea of leaving his post.

 “The 17th place? At Marseille, we are used to playing at the top of the table. That is why I’m trying to sound the alarm when we’re talking about ‘honorable’ defeats,” he added.

Genesio further gave an update on  Igor Paixao, whom they managed to retain over the summer amid the club’s financial problems.

They almost offloaded the Brazilian in the closing days of the transfer window, amid talks with Sunderland, but had to halt the move as it was clear that even his sale would not allow OM to recruit. 

After the sales of other star players over the summer and the lack of incomings, Paixao became the team’s star, but he has struggled, and could now face a period on the sidelines.

The Brazilian was forced off action in the first half of OM’s 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday night’s Classique at the Vélodrome, with Angel Gomes taking his place.

 Genesio, who is yet to be given an update, said it looks like an ankle injury.
