Late Havertz strike hands Arsenal slim 1-0 advantage

Arsenal left it late once again, but they will travel to the Emirates Stadium next week with a precious 1-0 lead over Sporting CP in the Champions League quarter-final.

Kai Havertz came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner, snatching a much-needed victory in the first leg.

For long periods, it looked like another frustrating night for the Gunners, yet the German international produced yet another clutch moment, firing home in the 91st minute to give his side something tangible to protect.

The contest exploded into life from the first whistle. Both teams struck the crossbar inside the opening 15 minutes in a breathless start that promised goals but ultimately delivered very little until the dying seconds.

Arsenal also had a goal disallowed in the second half when Martin Zubimendi’s low drive found the net, only for the assistant referee to flag Viktor Gyokeres offside in the build-up.

Sporting CP flew out of the blocks. Araujo raced clear, held off his marker, and forced David Raya to breathe a sigh of relief as his shot crashed against the woodwork.

Arsenal gradually settled, dominating possession, but their rhythm was repeatedly disrupted by swift Portuguese counters.

Noni Madueke almost caught Rui Silva out with a wicked in-swinging corner that bounced off the bar, while Martin Odegaard flashed a first-time effort just wide.

Despite their control, Arsenal could not find a breakthrough. Trincao wasted a promising break engineered by Araujo, misjudging his angles.

As the clock ticked into the final stages, Raya kept the tie alive with two outstanding saves in quick succession.

First, he denied Geny Catamo’s improvised finish in the 83rd minute, then he smothered Luis Suarez’s follow-up.

Those interventions proved decisive. In the 91st minute, Gabriel Martinelli picked out Havertz, who held his nerve, stood up to Silva, and curled a precise low shot into the bottom-left corner.

The Emirates will now host a tense second leg with Arsenal holding the slenderest of leads.
