Liverpool secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League match on Wednesday, marking only the second time the Reds have avoided defeat in their last eight head-to-head encounters against Los Blancos.
The match saw a competitive edge from the outset, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. However, it was Liverpool who ultimately broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, courtesy of Alexis Max Allister’s cleverly crafted goal. The Argentine midfielder played a one-two with Conor Bradley before sending his shot beyond the reach of Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Real Madrid would have equalized, but Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Caoimhín Kelleher, saved from the penalty spot to deny Mbappé in the 61st minute. There would be a missed penalty moments later as Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez also missed from the spot.
The Reds would not be denied as Liverpool’s second goal came in the 67th minute, with Cody Gakpo rising highest to head in Andy Robertson’s cross. The goal sealed a convincing 2-0 victory for the Reds, who maintained their perfect UEFA Champions League record this campaign.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, suffered their third consecutive European defeat, leaving them in 24th place in the standings. The loss marks a significant setback for the Spanish giants, who are struggling to find their footing in the new format for the competition.
Liverpool’s victory was also marked by several impressive individual performances, including that of 20-year-old Conor Bradley, who excelled in his defensive duties against the likes of Kylian Mbappé.
The win sees Liverpool remain top of their UEFA Champions League group, while Real Madrid will look to regroup and recover from their disappointing defeat.
Liverpool will now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they face Manchester City with the chances of reducing the point gap to 11 points. Meanwhile, in the Spanish La Liga, Real Madrid will be at Santiago Bernabeu to host Getafe over the weekend.
