Liverpool’s Joe Gomez faces lengthy layoff with hamstring injury

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set to miss a significant portion of the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. The England center-back suffered the injury during Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Plymouth Argyle on February 9.

Gomez, 27, was making his first appearance after six weeks out with a previous hamstring problem. However, his return was short-lived, as he was substituted after just 11 minutes. Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed that Gomez will be out for “large parts” of the season, although it is unclear whether he will require surgery.

Slot expressed his disappointment at the setback, saying, “It’s a big blow for Joe and for us.” Gomez has been limited to just 10 starts this season due to injuries, and his latest setback is a significant blow to Liverpool’s title hopes.

Liverpool faces Aston Villa at Villa Park on Wednesday, and Slot will be hoping that his team can bounce back from the disappointment of Gomez’s injury. The Reds will also be without Cody Gakpo, who missed Sunday’s 2-1 win against Wolves due to a knock.

The injury to Gomez is a concern for Liverpool, but Slot remains optimistic that the defender will return in time for the final phase of the season. With Liverpool pushing for the Premier League title, Gomez’s absence will be felt, but the team will be hoping to cope without him.

Gomez’s injury is the latest setback for Liverpool, but the team will be focusing on their upcoming fixtures, including the match against Aston Villa on Wednesday. With a busy schedule ahead, Liverpool will need to adapt to Gomez’s absence and find a way to maintain their title challenge. Liverpool’s next game is against Aston Villa on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 19:30 GMT. This Premier League match will be played at Villa Park.
