Manchester United legends raise expectations on Carrick

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has been told he must secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League if he is to stand any chance of landing the role on a permanent basis at Old Trafford.

The former midfielder has made an impressive start since stepping in to replace Ruben Amorim, guiding the club through an unbeaten opening five league matches to thrust himself into contention.

Carrick has overseen four wins and one draw in the Premier League, lifting United into fourth place and strengthening their push for European qualification.

The resurgence has reignited optimism around the club, with the team showing renewed structure and confidence under his leadership during a critical stretch of the campaign.

Former United defender Mikael Silvestre believes Champions League qualification is the minimum requirement if Carrick is to be seriously considered for the job full-time.

Silvestre said Carrick is effectively undergoing a long interview process, with every training session and match serving as an audition.

He added that Carrick’s familiarity with the dressing room and club culture gives him an edge over external candidates.

Silvestre also pointed to Carrick’s handling of young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as a key factor in the team’s turnaround.

Mainoo, who had struggled for minutes earlier in the season, has started every match under Carrick so far and delivered consistent performances.

Silvestre credited the England international’s professionalism, noting that he remained ready despite limited opportunities earlier in the campaign.

Carrick recently collected the Premier League Manager of the Month award for January and was quick to deflect praise onto his staff and players.

He highlighted the squad’s response to mid-season change, saying their ability to adapt quickly and perform across different types of matches has been particularly pleasing.

According to Carrick, the emotional lift from early positive results helped build momentum, but the squad’s focus since then has been just as important.

United now face a crucial away trip to Everton as they look to maintain their position in the top four.
