Julen Lopetegui was dismissed as coach of Sevilla. His departure from the club was already announced weeks ago, and since then, Wolverhampton has been tracking him.
The Wolves need a new coach, and Lopetegui checks all the boxes for the sports project that the club has in mind.
The club president would have traveled to Spain to present the offer and convince him to move to the Premier.
But according to the BBC’s Guillem Balagué, Lopetegui rejected the Wolves’ offer.
“The talks were very friendly, and Wolves managed to present a case of a team with a lot of potential and with players who would immediately understand what Lopetegui could do with them. But it is a sincere no. The personal and professional moment did not coincide,” he said. Balagué and added.
“Life sometimes decides for you. His 92-year-old father, to whom Lopetegui is very close, deserves his attention. It’s not a question of tiredness since he recovers energy by working. His squad was willing to follow him wherever he went after the intense but very successful stage in Seville.”
According to Balague, the Spanish coach wants to try his luck in the Premier, but not now.
“The only future plan I have right now is to go see my father, who is 92 years old, and I haven’t seen him in a long time.
My family also has a lot of merits; they live with the intensity of our profession, and we take our problems home… I owe them everything, and I am very grateful. They are the ones who give me the strength to continue being a football coach,” said Lopetegui.
