Bayer Leverkusen have secured the signature of five-time Champions League winner Lucas Vázquez on a two-year contract.
The 34-year-old, previously with Real Madrid, became a free agent this summer. Known for his versatility, Vázquez has primarily played as a right-back in recent years, amassing 23 trophies during his decade-long tenure at the Bernabéu, where he also served as one of LaLiga’s club captains.
Vázquez’s contract with Leverkusen extends until June 30, 2027, and he will don the No. 21 shirt, the Bundesliga club announced.
Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen’s managing director, praised Vázquez’s vast experience, noting that he has won every major title with Real Madrid over the past ten years.
Rolfes highlighted Vázquez’s technical prowess, tactical acumen, and ability to influence games as a provider and strategist, expressing confidence in his impact on the team.
Leverkusen, who clinched the Bundesliga title two seasons ago under former coach Xabi Alonso, now at Real Madrid, finished second in the league last season.
However, they started the 2025-26 campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Hoffenheim under new manager Erik ten Hag.
Vázquez emerged from Real Madrid’s youth academy, spent a loan spell at Espanyol, and returned to Madrid in 2015.
He played a key role in the squad that secured three consecutive Champions League titles from 2016 to 2018. Over time, he became a reliable option at full-back, often stepping in for Dani Carvajal, who coincidentally played for Leverkusen during the 2012/13 season.
The signing marks a significant addition for Leverkusen as they aim to build on their recent successes and compete at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions.
Vázquez’s experience and winning mentality are expected to bolster the squad’s ambitions in the Bundesliga and beyond.
