Lyon not sure of Rudi Garcia’s future

With his current deal set to expire at the end of the current season, Lyon coach Rudi Garcia might not get a new contract.

This is coming from the latest comment from Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas. The club boss is not assuring the former Roma coach over his future at the club. So, it won’t be a surprise if the manager bids farewell to the team at the season.

The team’s performance could also be a factor that will determine his future. Les Gone is currently second on the Ligue 1 table, three points behind Lille Metropole and one point above the defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain.

With this present position of the table, Lyon has the chance to push for a first league title since 2008. If Garcia is not given a new deal, it could be down to their final spot on the log.

It could be recalled that Lyon had changed managers at the end of a season in their run of eight consecutive Ligue 1 titles between 2002 and 2008 OL.

Lyon has been inconsistent this season, suffering some losses to teams like Montpellier.

Speaking in an extensive interview with L’Equipe, Aulas admitted that Garcia is getting results, which makes the team happy, but he has to work in line with the club’s vision.

Lyon had failed to qualify for any European tournament after finishing the suspended League in the 7th position. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the League title was awarded to PSG on a match-per-point basis.

Aulas said the former Marseille boss would be judged at the end of the season on both performances and the potential to carry on.

To continue their push for the title, Aulas revealed that he would meet with the club’s sporting director Juninho and director of football Vincent Ponsot to see the way forward.

He added that the theme of the meeting would be what Lyon can do to be champions again.
