Manchester City delivered a commanding performance at Anfield, defeating 10-man Liverpool 3-0 in their first Premier League match since being found guilty of breaching financial regulations.
Despite facing a hostile atmosphere, Enzo Maresca’s men showed their quality in the second half, with Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki all finding the net to secure an impressive victory.
The result restored City’s three-point advantage at the top of the Premier League table, although uncertainty continues to surround the club’s future following the independent commission’s verdict.
City have appealed the decision, but possible punishments include a significant points deduction, relegation or even expulsion from the Premier League.
The controversy surrounding City dominated the atmosphere before kick-off, with Liverpool supporters repeatedly directing “cheat” chants towards the visitors.
The Kop also displayed banners criticising City, including one carrying the message “A Generation Of Supporters Cheated”.
City supporters responded by showing their backing for the club’s leadership, displaying a flag that read “In Khaldoon We Trust”.
Despite the intense atmosphere, the opening 45 minutes produced little excitement.
City adopted a patient approach to control possession and reduce Liverpool’s attacking opportunities, while the hosts struggled to create clear chances.
The contest became more entertaining after the break as Liverpool attempted to take control.
City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced important saves to deny Victor Munoz and Ryan Gravenberch.
At the other end, Haaland wasted a golden opportunity when he dragged his effort wide after breaking through Liverpool’s defence.
However, the match turned decisively when Gravenberch received his second yellow card for fouling Doku, leaving Liverpool with 10 players.
City quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage.
Haaland opened the scoring in the 65th minute with a powerful finish, before Doku doubled the lead just three minutes later with a spectacular strike into the top corner.
Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute, producing an outstanding piece of individual skill to seal City’s convincing victory.
The comfortable win strengthened City’s position at the Premier League summit and demonstrated their ability to remain focused despite growing controversy away from the pitch.
For Liverpool, Gravenberch’s dismissal proved costly as their resistance collapsed during the closing stages.
Although City celebrated another important victory in the title race, the possibility of severe sanctions means their season remains overshadowed by uncertainty.
Maresca’s side continue to deliver results on the field, but the outcome of their appeal could ultimately have a major impact on their Premier League campaign.
