Mikel Merino delivered the performance of his international career as Spain cruised to a 6-0 victory over Turkey in Konya during Sunday’s World Cup qualifier.
The Arsenal midfielder scored a stunning hat-trick, his first ever as a professional, to put Luis de la Fuente’s side firmly in control of Group E.
Merino opened his account in the 22nd minute, finishing off Mikel Oyarzabal’s pass, before adding a second in first-half stoppage time.
He completed his treble shortly before the hour mark with a superb strike, curling into the top corner from over 20 yards after being teed up by teenager Lamine Yamal.
The 29-year-old has now scored six goals in as many appearances for Spain in 2025, a remarkable turnaround for a player who had previously netted just twice in his first 31 caps.
His display in Konya underlined his growing influence in the national team as Spain look to secure early qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Barcelona’s Pedri also shone on the night, scoring twice in the 6th and 62nd minutes to pile further misery on the Turkish defence.
Fellow Barça forward Ferran Torres added his name to the scoresheet in the 53rd minute, with Yamal again providing the assist.
Oyarzabal, meanwhile, played a pivotal creative role with three assists, linking up superbly with his attacking teammates as Spain produced one of their most dominant away performances in recent years.
Turkey, roared on by their home crowd at the Medaş Konya Büyükşehir Stadium, were left shell-shocked as they failed to muster a meaningful response.
Spain’s emphatic victory means they have won both of their opening matches in Group E, while Turkey and Georgia sit three points behind.
With momentum building and key players in form, La Roja have made the perfect start to their qualifying campaign. More FIFA World Cup qualification matches will be played on Monday across Europe and Africa.
