Mourinho sets demands for a Real Madrid return

Real Madrid have reportedly intensified efforts to bring Jose Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabeu as the club searches for a new head coach following a difficult season.

The Portuguese manager, currently in charge of SL Benfica, has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace departing boss Xabi Alonso.

According to reports in Spain, preliminary discussions have already taken place between Mourinho’s long-time agent Jorge Mendes and Real Madrid officials.

However, negotiations are expected to remain in the early stages until the domestic seasons in both Spain and Portugal are completed later this month.

Mourinho is said to be open to a return to Madrid but has outlined two major conditions before agreeing to take over for a second spell.

The first concerns transfer policy and recruitment strategy, with the veteran coach reportedly demanding a strong voice in decisions regarding squad rebuilding and key positions that need reinforcement.

The 63-year-old believes the current Madrid squad lacks balance in several areas and wants the authority to shape the team according to his tactical vision.

During his previous spell at the club, Mourinho played a major role in signings such as Luka Modric, Mesut Ozil, and Sami Khedira, and he is believed to want a similar level of influence if he returns.

The second condition relates to the internal structure at Real Madrid. Mourinho reportedly wants complete authority over first-team matters and expects the coaching staff’s autonomy to be respected without outside interference.

The demand comes after reports of dressing-room tensions during the current campaign, including issues involving Vinicius Junior and members of the coaching setup.

A potential return may also be helped by the terms of Mourinho’s current Benfica contract.

Reports suggest there is a €3 million release clause that would allow him to leave within 10 days of Benfica’s final game of the season, giving Real Madrid a relatively affordable opportunity to secure one of the club’s former managers ahead of the new campaign.
