Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that 40-year-old Manuel Neuer will be Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper at the upcoming World Cup.
The manager made the announcement after recalling the veteran shot-stopper to the national squad, two years after his international retirement.
Last Thursday, Nagelsmann named Neuer in his 26-man squad for the tournament, which will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In Neuer’s absence, Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann had started all six of Germany’s World Cup qualifiers.
Baumann kept four clean sheets and conceded just three goals during that campaign.
He also delivered a solid club season, recording seven clean sheets in 34 Bundesliga appearances with a 64% save percentage, slightly higher than Neuer’s 60% for Bayern Munich.
Despite Baumann’s consistent performances, Nagelsmann has opted for Neuer’s experience.
The manager revealed that his relationship with Baumann suffered when he informed the Hoffenheim player of the decision.
Neuer is expected to start in Germany’s opening match against Curacao on June 14.
Nagelsmann explained that with a team, the aim is to select the largest possible number of top players.
Regarding goalkeepers, he said the main task was to nominate the three best available. That was why the coaching staff decided to ask Neuer if he would like to return to international duty.
The manager added that there had been many conversations both with Neuer and within the coaching team.
He noted that everyone was aware of the special aura Manu possesses and what he brings to the squad.
Nagelsmann confirmed that Neuer had committed himself to playing in the tournament once again.
Germany have been drawn in Group E alongside Ivory Coast and Ecuador. According to Opta’s supercomputer, they are the sixth favourites to lift the trophy, with a 6% chance of winning.
Spain are favourites at 16%, followed by France (13%), England (11%), Argentina (10%), and both Portugal and Brazil at 7%.
The decision highlights Nagelsmann’s belief in leadership and proven quality under pressure as Germany prepare for their World Cup campaign.
