Newcastle shocks Liverpool at Wembley to lift League Cup

Newcastle United ended their 70-year trophy drought with a thrilling 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium. The Magpies dominated the match from start to finish, with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak securing the victory. Over 32,000 Newcastle fans witnessed the historic win, which marked a major milestone for the club.

The match could have taken a different turn if Liverpool had been awarded a penalty in the first half. The Reds appealed for a spot-kick when the ball struck Kieran Trippier’s arm, but both the referee and VAR ignored their claims. Newcastle took advantage of the reprieve and scored their first goal in stoppage time, with Burn heading in a corner from Trippier.

The Magpies thought they had doubled their lead early in the second half, but Isak’s goal was disallowed due to a marginal offside call. However, Newcastle didn’t have to wait long for their second goal, which arrived moments later. Isak pounced on a cross from Tino Livramento and diverted the ball into the far corner to give his team a 2-0 lead.

Liverpool pushed hard to get back into the match, and Nick Pope was forced to make a strong save to deny Curtis Jones. The Reds eventually scored a consolation goal in added time, with Federico Chiesa’s effort initially ruled out for offside before being awarded after a VAR review.

Despite the late scare, Newcastle held on to secure their first major trophy in seven decades. The win marked a major milestone for the club and their fans, who had waited generations for a taste of success.

Newcastle’s victory was a testament to the team’s hard work and determination under manager Eddie Howe. The Magpies will now look to build on this momentum and push for more success in the Premier League and other competitions.

Meanwhile, Arne Slot will have to motivate his boys to the finish line in the Premier League, which is now Liverpool’s only chance at a trophy this season despite having a chance at a treble eight days ago.
