Newcastle youngster Lewis Miley ruled out for the rest of the season

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley’s promising 2024/25 campaign has come to a premature end after the 20-year-old sustained a fractured fibula during a training session. 

The academy graduate, who has become a valuable member of Eddie Howe’s squad, will miss the remaining Premier League fixtures but is expected to make a full recovery in time for pre-season training.

Miley has enjoyed a breakout season, featuring 34 times across all competitions, including 20 starts. 

He contributed three goals and four assists, showcasing his composure on the ball, tactical awareness, and ability to influence games in midfield. 

His performances earned him regular opportunities in a competitive Newcastle side.

A club statement confirmed the injury details, noting that Miley will travel to see a specialist consultant on Wednesday before continuing his rehabilitation under the supervision of Newcastle’s medical team. 

The club remains optimistic about his recovery timeline.

The injury adds to Newcastle’s challenges in what has been a frustrating and inconsistent season.

Despite a morale-boosting victory over Brighton last weekend that ended a four-game losing streak in the league, the Magpies sit 13th in the Premier League table with 45 points.

They trail the European qualification places by six points with three matches remaining.

Newcastle will face Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, and Fulham in their final games. 

While securing a top-half finish remains possible, European football looks increasingly difficult unless results improve dramatically in the run-in.

Miley’s absence leaves a hole in central midfield depth as Howe manages a squad already stretched by injuries and fixture demands earlier in the season. 

The youngster’s development has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for the Tyneside club.
