Phil Foden has reached an agreement in principle over a new four-year contract with Manchester City, a move set to keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, with the option of a further year.
The 25-year-old’s current deal was due to expire next summer, but both player and club have now signalled their intention to continue their long-term partnership.
Despite a dip in form in recent months, the new agreement underlines City’s faith in Foden’s ability and importance to the squad.
The midfielder has not scored since December and has found himself in and out of the starting lineup, yet the club remains committed to his development and role within the team.
Foden most recently featured as a substitute in City’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Everton, a result that left them five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal with a game still in hand.
As the title race intensifies, the England international will be aiming to rediscover his best form in the closing stages of the campaign.
On the international stage, Foden is also looking to secure his place in the England national football team squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel has previously indicated that no player is guaranteed a spot, adding further pressure on the midfielder to perform consistently.
Since making his senior debut at 17 under manager Pep Guardiola, Foden has gone on to make over 350 appearances for Manchester City.
During that time, he has collected an impressive list of honours, including six Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League trophy, and two FA Cups.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney has backed Foden to remain a key figure, insisting he should be playing regularly.
Rooney praised the midfielder’s movement and creativity, arguing that players of his quality benefit from consistent game time, even during periods of inconsistent form.
