Chelsea legend John Terry believes that Mason Mount has the potential to become the captain of both Chelsea and England in the future.
The 22-year-old midfielder became the youngest player in Chelsea’s history to wear the armband in nearly 20 years last month, during the Blues’ FA Cup fixture against Luton Town.
He has become a vital player for both club and country. Mount now has 13 caps to his name for England since he made his international debut in 2019.
“Mason Mount is 100 per cent future Chelsea captain,” Terry said in an instagram live session.
“He’s been the best player at Chelsea this season to be honest. He’s a great lad, trains unbelievably well, is Chelsea through and through and shows leadership qualities. In my mind he’ll be Chelsea and England captain,” he added.
At present, Cesar Azpilicueta is the captain of Chelsea and Harry Kane is given the armband for England. But Terry believes that can change soon once Mount reaches his full potential as a player.
Mount also spoke to the media after the Blues’ win against Luton Town last month.
“It was a very proud moment for me, for my family,” said Mount.
“To lead the boys out at Stamford Bridge was an amazing feeling. It’s something that I dreamt of as a young boy. I dreamt of just walking out and playing a game, but with the captain’s armband on my arm as well made it even more special.
“It was a big moment for me and I learnt a lot from that experience and hopefully I can take that into the future and hopefully wear that armband again in the future.”
Mount missed only two games under Frank Lampard and even though he was benched in the first game under Thomas Tuchel, he has started in all of Chelsea’s last three matches, with all of them resulting in wins. In the 31 games Mount has played for the Blues this season, he has scored four goals and assisted six times.
