Barcelona has secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after defeating Benfica 3-1 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The win marks Barcelona’s progression to the next round with an aggregate score of 4-1. Teenager Lamine Yamal was the star of the show, providing a brilliant assist for Raphinha’s opening goal and scoring a stunning strike to put Barcelona 2-1 ahead.
Raphinha opened the scoring in the 11th minute, volleying in Yamal’s clever flick through the defense. However, Benfica’s Nicolas Otamendi equalized just two minutes later with an excellent header. Yamal’s moment of magic came in the 27th minute as he bent an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Raphinha struck again in the 42nd minute, scoring his second goal of the night with a clinical finish into the bottom corner. There was some confusion over whether the goal would stand, as play appeared to be pulled back for a foul by Otamendi on the edge of the box. However, after a check by the video assistant referee (VAR), the goal was confirmed, and Otamendi’s yellow card was rescinded.
Yamal’s impressive performance has broken records, as he became the youngest player to both score and assist a goal in a Champions League match at just 17 years and 241 days old. The teenager has now contributed to 28 goals this season, showcasing his incredible talent and potential.
Raphinha also deserves praise for his performance, as his double means he has contributed to 16 goals in the Champions League this season. Only Lionel Messi has had a hand in more goals in a single season for Barcelona in the competition.
Barcelona could have won by an even bigger margin, but Frenkie de Jong missed a golden chance to add a fourth goal on the night, firing wide from close range after a lovely move. Despite this, Barcelona’s win secures their spot in the quarter-finals, where they will face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille.
The win marks Barcelona’s continuation of their unbeaten streak, having not lost a game in any competition since December 21. With Yamal and Raphinha leading the charge, Barcelona looks poised to make a deep run in the Champions League.
