Rashford’s return gives boost for Barcelona ahead of UCL tie

Barcelona have been handed a major boost ahead of their crucial Champions League showdown with Chelsea, with Marcus Rashford returning to full training just in time for Tuesday’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

The England international had been absent from multiple sessions due to a mix of personal issues, minor physical concerns, and what was later described as the flu, creating confusion around his availability.

His reappearance on Sunday has eased uncertainty and put him in contention to feature in the high-stakes clash.

However, while Rashford returns, Barcelona will be without one of their most influential midfielders. Pedri has been ruled out after failing to train with the squad, extending his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during the October 26 El Clásico.

Despite earlier optimism, the club has decided not to rush the 22-year-old back. He is now expected to return at the weekend against Deportivo Alaves or, at the latest, for the match against Atletico Madrid on December 2.

Frenkie de Jong, who was suspended for the league match against Athletic Club, is available for the Chelsea game, offering Hansi Flick a crucial midfield option as he prepares to face a physically intense opponent.

Alejandro Balde is also likely to feature after hobbling off in Saturday’s 4-0 win but returning to light training. The squad conducted recovery sessions on Sunday as preparations intensified for the trip to London.

Rashford’s return comes at a pivotal moment for Barcelona, who are determined to maintain momentum in Europe under Flick.

The forward has produced 15 goal involvements in 16 games this season, rediscovering his confidence and thriving in Flick’s fast-transition system. With Ferran Torres in form and Raphinha fit again, Flick now faces a welcome selection dilemma as he considers the best attacking trio to deploy at Stamford Bridge.

Pedri’s continued absence reinforces an ongoing concern for Barcelona as the club manages yet another spell on the sidelines for the young playmaker.

After two years plagued by muscular problems, Pedri remained injury-free last season, but this latest setback has prompted the club to maintain strict caution.

His unavailability for such a high-profile Champions League fixture underscores Barcelona’s determination to protect him from long-term complications despite the stakes.

Barcelona now turn their attention fully to Tuesday’s heavyweight meeting with Chelsea, where Rashford could start depending on his condition.
