Real Madrid Clinches Late Victory Against Union Berlin in Champions League

In a gripping match, Real Madrid managed to secure a nail-biting victory against Union Berlin, with Dani Ceballos sealing the deal just a minute before the final whistle. The win ensures Real Madrid’s unblemished record in the Champions League this season.

Madrid, although already confirmed as group leaders, faced an initial setback as Union’s Kevin Volland capitalised on a counterattack just before halftime, nullifying Luca Modric’s earlier penalty miss.

Union Berlin, despite being eliminated from the Champions League, fought tooth and nail, requiring a win to sustain their Europa League aspirations. However, Joselu’s swift brace for Madrid silenced the Berlin Olympic Stadium, dashing Union’s hopes.

The home side showed resilience as Alex Kral swiftly narrowed the gap with a goal shortly after stepping onto the pitch. Yet, Real Madrid swiftly responded, Dani Ceballos’s deflected shot finding the net, clinching a late victory for the visitors.

Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, described the match as “slightly unusual,” acknowledging the two hectic minutes that complicated their game despite controlling it for a significant duration.

Union Berlin’s coach, Nenad Bjelica, acknowledged Madrid’s ability to exhaust their opponents, highlighting the challenge of facing a team of Real Madrid’s caliber.

This defeat marked the end of Union’s inaugural Champions League campaign, concluding with two draws and four defeats. Coach Bjelica emphasized the team’s intent to learn from this experience and perform better in the future.

Despite Modric’s missed penalty, Real Madrid showcased their experience and dominance throughout the game. Joselu’s stellar performance, securing two crucial goals, showcased Madrid’s resilience and tactical prowess.

The thrilling encounter ended with Dani Ceballos capitalising on a break assisted by Jude Bellingham, securing the late victory for Real Madrid, and continuing their impressive Champions League journey.
