Real Madrid complete Bernardo Silva signing on free transfer

Real Madrid have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season by signing Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva on a two-year contract.

The 31-year-old joins the Spanish giants as a free agent after bringing an end to his highly successful nine-year spell at Manchester City, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders.

Silva arrives in Madrid following a trophy-laden career at City, having scored 76 goals and provided 77 assists in 451 appearances for the club.

During his time in England, he played a key role in multiple domestic and European triumphs, becoming a fan favorite for his creativity, work rate, and consistency under Pep Guardiola.

The move reunites Silva with newly appointed Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who has been tasked with rebuilding a side that endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.

Madrid finished eight points behind rivals Barcelona in the La Liga title race and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, ending the season without a major trophy.

Silva had been strongly linked with a return to Spain in recent months, with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid reportedly interested in securing his services.

However, Real Madrid moved decisively to secure the Portugal international, making him their second major acquisition of the summer transfer window following the arrival of defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth £52 million.

Despite completing his club future, Silva remains focused on international duty and is currently representing Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced midfielder is expected to play a central role in his country’s quest for global glory before linking up with his new teammates in Madrid ahead of the new season.

Real Madrid’s transfer activity is far from over, with the club reportedly pursuing Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries and former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate.

Meanwhile, veteran centre-back Antonio Rudiger has committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension until 2027, as Madrid continue to reshape their squad under Mourinho’s leadership.
