Koeman has no regrets after Netherlands’ frustrating draw with Japan

Ronald Koeman has expressed confidence in his tactical decisions despite the Netherlands being held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their opening World Cup Group F match at Dallas Stadium.

The Dutch took the lead twice through Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville, but Japan fought back on both occasions, with Daichi Kamada scoring a late equalizer. 

Summerville became the first player to score his debut goal for the Netherlands at a World Cup since Daley Blind against Brazil in 2014. 

However, he was substituted shortly afterward, with Nathan Aké brought on in a defensive move intended to protect the lead.

Koeman insisted he stood by his choices. He told reporters that there had been problems with pressure on the flanks and that the team had not defended well for either of the goals conceded.

He added that the Netherlands could have scored a third goal and therefore he had no regrets over his approach as he attempted to close out the victory.

The match was a low-event encounter, reflected in the expected goals statistics, with the Netherlands recording 0.78 xG compared to Japan’s 0.59 xG. 

It marked the first time the Dutch had taken the lead twice in a World Cup fixture and failed to win. 

For Japan, it was only the second occasion they had trailed twice in a finals match but still avoided defeat, following their 2-2 draw with Senegal in 2018.

Koeman expects a stronger performance from his players as the campaign progresses. The Netherlands will resume Group F action on Saturday against high-flying Sweden.

The result leaves the Dutch with work to do in the group, but Koeman remains optimistic, emphasizing that while defensive lapses were evident, the team created enough opportunities to secure all three points. 

He will now focus on addressing the issues on the flanks and improving concentration in the closing stages of matches ahead of the crucial clash with Sweden.
