Real Madrid defender sidelined with injury ahead of new season

Real Madrid have suffered an early setback ahead of the 2026/27 season after confirming that defender Raul Asencio has sustained a muscle injury that is expected to keep him out for several weeks.

The injury is the first major fitness concern for new manager Jose Mourinho since taking charge of the Spanish giants.

In an official statement, the club revealed that medical examinations diagnosed Asencio with an injury to the rectus femoris muscle in his right leg.

Real Madrid added that the defender’s recovery will be closely monitored, with his return to action depending on how well he responds to treatment.

According to reports, the 23-year-old is expected to spend between four and six weeks on the sidelines.

The projected recovery period rules him out of the remainder of Madrid’s pre-season preparations and leaves his availability for the opening fixtures of the new La Liga campaign in serious doubt.

Asencio suffered the injury during Tuesday’s pre-season friendly against Leganes at Valdebebas.

The centre-back completed the first half before being forced off after experiencing discomfort, prompting further medical assessment by the club.

The timing of the injury comes amid uncertainty surrounding the defender’s future.

Recent reports have suggested that Asencio could leave the Santiago Bernabéu this summer, particularly following the arrival of French international Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract with Liverpool.

Although the injury is not believed to be long-term, it is expected to delay any decisions regarding Asencio’s future until he completes his rehabilitation.

For Mourinho, the setback reduces his defensive options as Real Madrid continue preparations for the new campaign, with a pre-season friendly against Fiorentina next on the schedule.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid star Gonzalo Garcia is set to move to the Premier League for 70 million euros, with London club Fulham being his destination.

The forward is set to link up with Alvaro Arbeloa, who coached Real Madrid briefly last season before sealing a permanent role with the Cottagers this summer.
