Real Madrid face Mallorca in Spanish Super Cup quarterfinals

Real Madrid’s 2025 campaign got off to a dramatic start, as they edged Valencia 2-1 in La Liga thanks to an injury-time strike. The win was marred by Vinícius Júnior’s red card, but Luka Modrić’s record-breaking goal made the difference. Modrić became the oldest player to score a competitive goal for the club, breaking Ferenc Puskás’ previous record.

The victory was a testament to Real Madrid’s squad depth, which has been tested all season. With defenders David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, and Éder Militão still sidelined, there is speculation that reinforcements could arrive this month. However, any new signings are unlikely to be available in time for the Spanish Super Cup quarterfinals, where Real Madrid face Mallorca.

Mallorca’s preparations for the match were dealt a blow when they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by fourth-tier Pontevedra on Friday. The 3-0 loss was unexpected, given that Jagoba Arrasate’s men had won their last two league games of 2024. Mallorca will need to rebound quickly from the defeat and make the most of their freshness, having not played since the Copa del Rey loss.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, are chasing a record-equalling 14th Spanish Super Cup trophy. They face a Mallorca side that has a poor recent H2H record, winning just one of the last eight meetings with Madrid (D1, L6). The Pirates’ only triumph in this competition came in 1998, when they beat Barcelona 3-1 over two legs.

Players to watch include Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, who showed impressive resilience to assist and score against Valencia after missing a penalty. Cyle Larin has scored each of Mallorca’s last three goals, with the last two coming between the 50th and 55th minute.

The match promises to be an exciting encounter, with both teams looking to make a statement. Real Madrid’s recent Super Cup games have been high-scoring affairs, with six of their last seven matches seeing both teams score (W5, L2).
