Real Madrid lose 2-1 to Espanyol

Real Madrid’s winless run has now been stretched to 3 games after Sunday’s 2-1 to Espanyol.

The Los Blancos were held to a 0-0 draw by Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeau in their last La Liga game last week.

They were also shocked by debutants Sheriff Tiraspol in a 2-1 defeat in the UEFA Champions League before Sundays trip to Espanyol.

Real Madrid trailed from the 17th minute when Raul de Tomas scored for the hosts and they added a second on the hour mark when Aleix Vidal scored the second.

Karim Benzema scored his 9th La Liga goal of the season with 19 minutes plus stoppage time to play but np further goal was scored as Espanyol scooped a famous win, their first over Real Madrid since 2018.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s loss to Espanyol means that the Los Blancos are now levelled on points with Atletico Madrid on the top of the table with 17 points each from 8 games although Carlo Ancelotti’s side are top with a superior goals difference.

Barcelona’s poor run of form continued with their second loss on the bounce against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.

Ronald Koeman’s side has been under pressure after unimpressive results this season, particularly with two losses from their first two UEFA Champions League games of the season.

After losing to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League during the week, it was always going to be a tough test trying to beat an Atletico Madrid side that has Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann.

Thomas Lemar opened the scoring for the hosts inside the first 23 minutes before former Barcelona forward Luis Suarez made it 2-0 a minute before half time.

In some selected La Liga results, Elche beat Celta Vigo by a lone goal, Cadiz and Valencia drew 0-0, while Athletic Bilbao beat Alaves 1-0.
