Real Madrid loses defender for the rest of the season

Real Madrid have suffered a major setback after defender Ferland Mendy was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a serious injury.

The left-back was forced off just ten minutes into the club’s recent La Liga clash against RCD Espanyol, raising immediate concerns within the squad and coaching staff.

Medical assessments carried out after the match confirmed the severity of the issue, with the club diagnosing a lesion in the rectus femoris tendon of Mendy’s right leg.

The injury, sustained early in the game, appeared significant from the player’s reaction on the pitch, and subsequent tests validated fears of a long-term absence.

The timing of the injury is a significant blow for head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, as Mendy has been a key defensive figure when fit.

His absence leaves a major gap in Madrid’s backline at a crucial stage of the campaign, with limited options available to fill the void in such a demanding period.

Reports suggest that surgery is now the most likely course of action for the French defender.

Should he undergo the procedure, Mendy is expected to face a recovery period of around five months, which would not only end his current season but also impact his availability for the start of the next campaign.

This latest setback marks Mendy’s fifth injury of the season, underlining ongoing fitness concerns that have plagued his time in Madrid.

Despite his limited appearances, he has made important contributions, particularly during the knockout stages of European competition, highlighting his value to the squad when available.

Mendy’s injury also reflects a broader problem at Real Madrid, with the team continuing to struggle with a growing list of fitness issues.

The Frenchman has managed just 448 minutes across nine appearances this season, having only recently returned from a previous long-term layoff, and his absence adds further strain on a squad already dealing with a demanding schedule.
