The 2024/2025 La Liga season kicks off with two consecutive draws

One of the first games of the 2024/25 La Liga campaign was a fixture between Athletic Club and Getafe but despite being a new season and somewhat new players, it was the same result as both teams ended hostilities at San Mames.

After 90 minutes, the game became the fifth 1-1 draw between both teams in their last six meetings. Athletic Club came into the new season on the back of their first Copa Del Rey trophy in 40 years and their best league finish since 2015/16.

However, that didn’t deter Getafe from trying to usurp their spirited hosts as loanee Carles Pérez sent an effort whistling sideways.

Athletic’s Oihan Sancet turned out the first goal scorer of the new season as he curled a strike into the corner from outside the box to open the scoring in the 27th minute.

Athletic Club only dropped points five times from winning positions in the 2023/2024 season and Getafe was one of those five teams and while the hosts ended the first half confidently, Getafe struck in the second half.

While Athletic kept the momentum going early in the second half, Getafe hit with 25 minutes left as Chrisantus Uche leveled the scoring to make the final moments of the game interesting.

Nico Williams had a good summer with the Spanish national team at Euro 2024 and he showed momentum with his performance that almost snatched the winner with a long-range effort but was denied by the Getafe goalkeeper who tipped the ball away to safety.

David Soria also denied Yuri Berchiche in stoppage time to help Ernesto Valverde keep their unbeaten run at home to nineteen games now. Athletic Club’s next game is away to Barcelona on Match Day 2 while Getafe is at home to Rayo Vallecano.

Thursday’s second La Liga fixture between Real Betis and Girona ended in a 1-1 draw after ninety minutes.
